A couple has been charged with reckless homicide and other felonies after allegedly tossing a newborn baby over an embankment at their home.
Following a year-long investigation, Kentucky State Police said 27-year-old Deeann Bennett and 31-year-old Charles Bennett, both of Booneville, were arrested on Monday following their indictment by an Owsley County Grand Jury for reckless homicide (class D felony) and concealing the birth of an infant (class A misdemeanor).
Deann Bennett was additionally indicted for tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse, both class D felonies.
Kentucky State Police said the investigation began on November 29, 2024, when troopers in Richmond received a 911 call just before 10:30 a.m. about a female who had been transported to a local hospital after claiming to have a miscarriage.
“While at the hospital, the couple informed authorities that the infant remained at their residence on Lewis Lane in Booneville,” state police said. “Troopers and detectives responded to the residence, where they located an unresponsive infant over an embankment outside the home.”
Owsley County Coroner Rob Morgan pronounced the infant deceased at the scene.
The newborn was subsequently transported to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
Both suspects were lodged in Three Forks Regional Jail.
