The Grayson County High School Cougars basketball team’s rampage at Rupp Arena continues this afternoon as the Cougars play in the second Elite Eight game of the day.
Awaiting the Cougars is Great Cross High School, the defending state champion and upset champions of this year’s 11th Region.
Located in Georgetown, Great Crossing is 24-11 on the season. The door was left ajar for the War Hawks to walk away 11th Region champs when the state’s No.-3 ranked team (according to MaxPreps), Madison Central, lost to No.-5 rated Frederick Douglass in the semifinals. Great Crossing then beat Frederick Douglass in the regional finals, 53-45.
The War Hawks of course lost their leading scorer and 2025 Kentucky Mr. Basketball winner Malachi Moreno to graduation. Moreno averaged 21.5 points per game along with 14.9 rebounds. The program also graduated the team’s second leading scorer Vince Dawson, who accounted for 18.0 points per contest.
Great Crossing, coached by Steve Page, is led in scoring this season by 6-7 center, sophomore Brady Orem, who nets 21.7 points per game, and 6-2 senior combo guard Travanti Cooper’s 14.1 points per contest.
Orem leads the squad with 9.8 rebounds per game.
The War Hawks average 67.9 points per game while giving up 59.7
Great Crossing will likely look to push the ball up the floor, as will the Cougars, so expect an up-and-down, high-scoring affair.
The Cougars are ranked No.-12 in the state by MaxPreps, and advanced to the Elite Eight courtesy of a 73-65 win over Taylor County on Wednesday. The Cougars settled in after a low-scoring first half affair to post 48 second half points — that’s an average of three points per minute — on their way to victory in front of a sea of orange.
Today’s contest is scheduled to tip-off at 12:30.
Sam Gormley and Steven Smith will call the action for K105 and via the K105 audio stream. They’ll hit the airwaves about 20 minutes prior to tip.
Go Cougs!
