Police in Hardin County are investigating after three historic plaques were stolen from of the former Hardin County Courthouse.
Elizabethtown Police Department Public Affairs Officer Chris Denham said that detectives on March 31 “began a theft investigation involving three historic bronze plaques” stolen from the courthouse building, located at 100 Public Square in Elizabethtown.
The stolen plaques include a 1933 Hardin County Courthouse Dedication plaque, as well as two 1955 Hardin County Historical Society plaques commemorating President Abraham Lincoln and President James Buchanan, both of whom have historical ties to Hardin County.
The theft is believed to have occurred between March 18 and March 24.
All three plaques are cast bronze with ornamental corner rosettes and hold significant historical value to the community, Denham said.
“If someone currently in possession of the plaques would like to arrange an anonymous return, I am willing to facilitate this,” according to Denham.
Anyone with information regarding the theft is asked to contact the Elizabethtown Police Department at 270-765-4125. Information can also be shared anonymously by calling Hardin County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-597-8123 visiting p3tips.com.
Any information reported to Hardin County Crime Stoppers that leads to the recovery of the plaques and/or the identification of the suspect[s] will make the tipster eligible for a cash reward.
