Nearly 20 pets have died in a house fire in Daviess County.
The Daviess County Fire Department (DCFD), Thruston-Philpot and Yelvington Fire Departments responded on Sunday at 5:40 p.m. to a structure fire on Graham Lane East in Thruston, just east of Owensboro.
“While en route, dispatch advised there was smoke coming from the roof and that someone had opened the front door and was met with heavy smoke,” the DCFD said in a social media post.
Dispatch further told firefighters that the residents were not home, but that there were 13 dogs and 6 cats inside the residence.
Upon firefighters arriving at the scene, they “deployed a hose-line through the front door of the structure and extinguished (a) majority of the fire,” according to DCFD.
As additional units arrived, the residence was ventilated and a search for the animals was carried out.
“Unfortunately,” DCFD said, “after a thorough search of the home all the animals inside had succumbed to the fire and were deceased. Each was carefully removed and accounted for.”
