A school bus driver has been arrested after driving impaired with 19 children on the bus.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Office responded on Friday afternoon at 2:30 to a report of “reckless and potentially impaired driving” by 36-year-old Webster County Schools bus driver Cody L. Wilson, of Providence.
The investigation “determined that school staff had observed Wilson exhibiting sluggish behavior and nodding off while operating the school bus, which was reportedly driven recklessly,” the sheriff’s office said.
The bus contained 19 students and three adult passengers, as the adults on the bus, according to the sheriff’s office, “expressed apprehension about Wilson’s possible impairment.”
Wilson was removed from the bus by deputies, as police “noted signs of impairment in Wilson’s behavior.”
Wilson was given a field sobriety test and Advance Roadside Impaired Driver Enforcement testing.
“The results of these assessments indicated that Wilson was under the influence of controlled substances while in physical control of the school bus …,” according to the sheriff’s office.
Wilson was charged with 22 counts of felony wanton endangerment, commercial driver under the influence of alcohol and DUI (controlled substance, aggravating circumstances).
He was lodged in the Webster County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond.
