Wendel “Pete” Basham, age 75, of Leitchfield, KY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Baptist Health Hardin. Born on August 2, 1950, in Leitchfield to the late Layman “Pop” and Louise Fulkerson Williams, Pete touched the lives of many during his time with us.
Pete was a true lover of life. He loved nothing more than riding motorcycles, tinkering with cars, and listening to his favorite country tunes. However, what truly brought him joy was the time spent with his family and friends. His grandchildren and great-granddaughter were the apples of his eye, and he cherished every moment he spent with them.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 27 years, Fredia Walls Basham; his devoted daughter, Tonya Whobrey; his sister, Debbie Dennison (Rick); and four grandsons who always made him proud: Benjamin “Luke” Decker (Rachel), Cole Decker (Tracie Perez), Nathan Whobrey, and Caleb Whobrey. He also leaves a bright light in his great-granddaughter, Hazel Decker, and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of another great-grandchild set to join the family in August.
In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his sister, Kimbra Williams, and his beloved grandson, Alexander Hayden Whobrey.
The family will be holding funeral services to celebrate Pete’s life at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at Leitchfield Funeral Home. A burial will follow at Holly Cemetery. Friends and family will be able to gather for visitation from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, and again from 9:00 AM until the service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pete was a wonderful man who left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him, and he will be so dearly missed. Online condolences may be shared at www.leitchfieldfh.com.
