The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office welcomes a new deputy as Kelsey Overton recently graduated from the police training academy in Richmond, Kentucky.

Deputy Overton graduated from Class 488 on January 26, after a grueling 23-plus weeks of police training.

“Last year, Deputy Overton competed for one position with the GCSO during a two-week hiring process which included an oral interview with members of the Leitchfield Police Department and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, as well as a physical fitness test,” Sheriff Chaffins said.

Scores from the interview and the physical test were combined to put Overton ahead of the other applicants, Sheriff Chaffins noted.

Sheriff Chaffins said Overton, 23, continued to excel while at the academy by receiving the Excellence in Physical Fitness Award after achieving an 80 percent or higher on the five standardized tests, which included the bench press, sit-ups, 300-meter sprint, pushups, and a mile-and-a-half run.

In addition to the physical fitness award, Sheriff Chaffins said Overton was also recognized for either meeting or exceeding standards set by the training staff in areas such as conduct, attitude, relationships with others, verbal and written communication skills, defensive tactics, and academic exams.

Overton’s basic training instructor, Ben Wilcox bragged, “If Mr. Overton continues his duties as an officer with the same performance standards he achieved at the academy, he will be an asset to his agency.”

Sheriff Chaffins added that, “There is no doubt that Deputy Overton will, indeed, be a great asset to the GCSO and Grayson County.”
