Thursday afternoon at approximately 2:10, the Leitchfield Fire Department responded to a smoke alarm at Parkland Manor, located at 702 William Thomason Byway.
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found smoke pouring out of second floor windows. Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said the source of the dense smoke was food left burning on a stove in one of the second floor apartments, with Chief Duvall saying he’s never seen heavier smoke caused by burning food.
The entire smoke-filled second floor of the four story facility was evacuated (there are a total of 74 apartments in the building).
Chief Duvall said the elevator automatically shuts down for safety reasons when the smoke/fire alarm sounds, and the elevator company is responsible approving the device becoming operational again.
It took firefighters over an hour to clear the building of smoke.
There were no injuries reported.
