The Pike County School District, which passed a resolution to train and arm school employees with firearms, has scrapped that plan.

Instead, Pike County sheriff’s deputies will patrol the county’s five high schools.

The Pike County School Board passed the proposal to arm school employees in February after multiple school shootings, and originally pursued the plan because the district couldn’t afford to pay police to patrol the schools, according to media reports.

The sheriff’s office, though, offered to place deputies at the schools at no cost to the district.
