A Corbin teenager has been arrested for faking her own kidnapping while attempting to extort money from her father.

On Monday, the father of 19-year-old Abbygail Farley went to Corbin police saying that his daughter was missing, and that he had received text messages from her kidnappers. Police said Farley’s father was receiving messages from his daughter’s phone saying she had been abducted and that her abductors wanted money, according to media reports.

Corbin Police notified the FBI, who pinged Farley’s phone to locate her. Her father then placed $400 where the “kidnappers” told him to put the money.

After Farley’s father dropped off the money, the FBI searched several nearby homes, locating Farley after checking only a few residences. She admitted to police she made up the story.

Authorities said Farley has a drug problem, which was the motivation for the fake kidnapping. Police also said Farley acted alone.

She was charged with falsely reporting an incident, theft by extortion, theft by unlawful taking, and disorderly conduct and lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
