A Leitchfield man was arrested Thursday night after fleeing Grayson County Sheriff’s Deputy DJ Newton on foot.
At approximately 8:35, Newton was on regular patrol when he spotted 27-year-old Leslie Neighbors behaving aggressively toward two other men near East Chestnut Street and North Main Street. Newton turned his cruiser around and activated his emergency lights “at which point Neighbors fled from the scene, northbound on North Main Street,” according to the arrest citation.
Newton exited his cruiser and chased Neighbors, giving him verbal commands to stop, but the suspect continued fleeing, causing Newton to run through traffic on Mill Street. Neighbors then entered an apartment in the 200 block of Mill Street.
Newton knocked on the door of the apartment and announced he was entering the residence, when Neighbors said, “Come in,” according to the report. Newton knocked twice more and then entered the home and saw Neighbors sitting on a couch.
Newton “gave verbal commands for the subject to put his hands behind his back (and) that he was under arrest,” the report said. But Neighbors refused to comply, resulting in Newton removing the suspect from the couch and placing him in handcuffs.
Neighbors was charged with fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and alcohol intoxication in a public place. He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
Multiple officers and deputies from the Leitchfield PD and Grayson County Sheriff’s Office assisted Newton at the scene.
