A former Western Kentucky University professor has pled guilty to defrauding the university out of nearly $250,000.

Matthew Dettman, 52, pled guilty in U.S. District Court on Thursday and faces up to 20 years in prison and a combined maximum fine of $250,000. As part of the plea agreement, Dettman is also required to pay $236,000 in restitution to WKU.

Dettman admitted to defrauding WKU by diverting payments from concrete and soil treatments from the Engineering Department between 2006 and October 2017. He used wire transfers to perpetrate the scam.

Dettman was placed on unpaid administrative leave in October 2017 and resigned in December. He began his teaching career at WKU in 1992.
