Leitchfield Utilities has announced it has started cleaning water mains of “harmless corrosion and accumulated foreign matter.”

The utility will clean the water mains by “opening hydrants and allowing the water to escape under high pressure.”

Officials said, “The flushing action is an important part of our program in order to maintain high quality water. It also allows for proper hydrant maintenance for fire protection.”

According to the utility, hydrant flushing is a state mandated program that must be periodically executed.

Flushing of the hydrants may produce a discoloration in the water, but the safety of the water is not affected, according to authorities.

“However, water users are advised to run cold water tap for several minutes before use, to determine if discoloration has occurred. If discoloration has occurred, it is suggested to reschedule clothes washing and other cleaning projects until the water runs clear,” according to officials. Users may also experience low water pressure while flushing takes place.

Flushing is scheduled to end on Sunday, November 4. While the flushing is being executed, it is expected the entire system will be affected. Utilities officials suggest restaurants, laundry mats and other businesses maintain low water usage until the water becomes clear.
