An Elizabethtown stands accused of seriously injuring his one-month old baby.

Nigel Aguirre, 27, caused bleeding and swelling in baby’s brain. The child is in critical but stable condition at Norton Children’s Hospital.

While being interviewed by Elizabethtown police, Aguirre said he “wanted to cause some pain so the infant would cry, in hopes the infant would cry himself to sleep,” according to the News-Enterprise. He also told investigators that fluid found on the infant’s stomach was caused by him pushing on the child’s midsection to help the baby have a bowel movement.

Aguirre was arrested following the interview and charged with first-degree assault (domestic violence).

He was lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center but is no longer listed as an inmate. His bond was set at $25,000 cash.
