Grayson County High School has been named one of the top 60 public high schools in the state of Kentucky.
U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Best High Schools named GCHS the 58th best public high school in the state, out of 227 rated high schools.
“It’s another reason to celebrate the great things going on here at GCHS,” Principal Josh Baldwin said. “I am so proud of our teachers and our students who work so hard to excel. This is an outstanding measure of their efforts and their success.”
According to the publication’s website, the 2019 rankings for the first time included every eligible public high school in the nation and in each state. Schools are no longer categorized with gold, silver or bronze designations as in previous years, but ranked numerically.
Ranking criteria was also expanded from college readiness (given 30 percent weight in the evaluation), to also include college level curriculum provided (10 percent), math and reading proficiency (20 percent) and performance (20 percent), underserved — minority and low-income — student performance (10 percent), and graduation rate (10 percent).
“There is so much positive happening at GCHS and throughout our district,” Superintendent Doug Robinson stated. “This national recognition is testament to the high-quality education and future-ready opportunities available to help our students transition for success.”
High schools in neighboring counties were rated as follows:
Elizabethown HS #22, Barren County HS #59, Central Hardin HS #64, North Hardin HS #68, Meade County HS #78, John Hardin HS #85, Edmonson County HS #93, Hancock County HS #125, Breckinridge County HS #173, Ohio County HS #179, with Butler County HS and Hart County HS rated between #190 and #227 (the report did not separate the bottom 37 high schools ).
The top 10 high schools in Kentucky, according to the criteria used by the magazine, are as follows:
