Three people from the same family, including two children, have been killed in a two-vehicle accident on I-65 in Hart County.

Saturday night just before 8, Kentucky State Police responded to the 68 mile marker of I-65, near Munfordville, after a 2013 Dodge Caravan collided with a tow truck, owned by Crossroads Towing.

Police said the preliminary investigation showed that 36-year-old Augustin Gonzalez, of Cary, North Carolina, was traveling south in the Dodge when he failed to see a tow truck stopped in the roadway. The tow truck driver, 55-year-old Jeffrey Watkins, of Rockfield, had stopped partially in the roadway to give aid to the victims of a minor car accident. Police said Watkins had the vehicle’s yellow emergency lights activated. Gonzalez, though, crashed into the rear of the tow truck.

Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene, while six-year-old Noelle Gonzalez died after being transported to Caverna Memorial Hospital. Two-year-old Gwendolyn Gonzalez was airlifted to Norton Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A third child in the van, eight-year-old Nicholas Gonzalez, was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Watkins was not in the tow truck when it was struck by the van and was uninjured.
