Authorities are asking the public for help locating a suspect in a 2013 murder in Hopkinsville.

Police said Jason Van Patterson, 48, is the prime suspect in the stabbing and strangulation murder of 53-year-old Fay Springfield Wadlington at her home on July 13, 2013. Patterson is a white male standing 5-feet-11 and weighing about 220 pounds.

DNA found at the murder scene matched DNA from a robbery in Lexington that Patterson committed the same day he murdered Wadlington, according to authorities. Patterson’s arrest warrant states that the victim was strangled with a garrote made from a broom handle and a white, cotton t-shirt. She had also been stabbed multiple times with a pair of scissors. Police said Patterson knew the victim.

Patterson has ties to Madisonville and several central Kentucky counties. He is originally from Lancaster, in Garrard County.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information that leads to the arrest of Patterson. Contact Crime Stoppers at 270-887-TIPS, or one can send an anonymous text to “CRIMES” (274637) and then enter “hpdtip” in the text, followed by the tip information.

Citizens with information may also contact the Hopkinsville Police Department at 270-890-1500.
