A Caneyville man arrested twice since mid-June was arrested on his fourth DUI and nabbed with multiple stolen items during a traffic stop on Falls of Rough Road.

Sunday night just before midnight, Grayson County Deputies Zane Greer and Mark Johnson executed a traffic stop in the 7700 block of Falls of Rough Road on a 2000 Chevrolet Trail Blazer with only one working headlight and pulling a trailer with no lights. While pulling the vehicle over, Greer observed a passenger, later determined to be 35-year-old Nicholas E. Embry, of Caneyville, toss something from the Chevy, later discovered to be a needle, according to the arrest citation.

Deputies made contact with the driver, 35-year-old Nathan E. Sanford, of Caneyville, and found that Sanford did not have a driver’s license and the vehicle had expired tags. Deputies also discovered that Sanford had two warrants for his arrest issued out of Butler County. According to the citation, Greer said that it appeared Sanford and Embry were under the influence of an intoxicant.

Additionally, another passenger, 55-year-old Sheila D. Lacefield, of Caneyville, was found to be in possession of methamphetamine that she attempted to hide from police.

The trailer that the suspects were pulling contained multiple stolen tractor batteries, according to the citation, and inside the Trail Blazer deputies located more stolen batteries as well as burglary tools. The trailer and stolen items were seized as police attempt to locate the rightful owner[s].

Sanford was given a field sobriety test and arrested. Both Lacefield and Embry were also arrested.

Sanford was charged with his fourth DUI, receiving stolen property (more than $500, less than $10,000) and possession of burglary tools, along with several non-moving violations.

Lacefield was charged with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and tampering with physical evidence.

Embry was charged with receiving stolen property (more than $500, less than $10,000), possession of burglary tools, tampering with physical evidence, public intoxication (controlled substance), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

All three suspects were lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

This marks Sanford’s third run-in with the law since June 17 when he was arrested after running out of gas as he fled from the Morgantown Police Department on Hwy 79 in Butler County.

In that case, Sanford was charged with two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, reckless driving, possession of marijuana as well as non-moving violations. He was later indicted by a Butler County Grand Jury on those charges as well as for being a persistent felony offender.

Then, in the early evening of July 11, Sanford was found passed out on the porch of a residence in the 1400 block of Morgantown Road. Arriving first on the scene was Caneyville Police Chief Anthony Clark who, after waking up Sanford, discovered a large knife in his pocket.

Sanford was found to be under the influence of an unknown drug.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Jakob Clemons, who arrived on scene shortly after Clark, arrested Sanford and charged him with menacing, public intoxication (excludes alcohol), and third-degree criminal trespassing.

Embry was indicted by a Grayson County Grand Jury in August of last year for receiving stolen property and obscuring the identity of a machine.
