Six more dead horses have been located near the Floyd/Pike county line, not far from Prestonsburg.

Last week, 14 dead horses were found on the remote property near a strip mine. The latest of the deceased horses discovered were found over the weekend, and were killed at the same time as the 14 horses found last week, according to Dumas Rescue, an eastern Kentucky animal rescue group.

The horse appeared to have been hunted down over a large area and shot with a small caliber weapon, according to Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt.

“This is very inhumane and it’s a very cruel act of somebody who just apparently had nothing else to do or whatever just to go back on a strip job and shoot down horses who were, one of them obviously was feeding, had grass in its mouth,” Hunt said in a statement to media outlets. “It looked like a battlefield for just horses.”

The original reward offered in the case has grown from $2,000 to $20,000 courtesy of monetary donations from several agencies, including $5,000 from the Humane Society of the United States, $2,5000 from the Kentucky Humane Society, $2,500 in local donations, and $5,000 from a private California donor.
