A Leitchfield man has been airlifted after suffering serious burns in an apartment fire.
The Leitchfield Fire and Police Departments and EMS responded to 220 Sunbeam Road Tuesday night at approximately 7:45 on the report that an apartment was on fire.
Upon arriving, firefighters found the apartment partially on fire, with the apartment’s male occupant running out of the building on fire. According to Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall, the fire burned the clothes off the victim. He was airlifted to a Level 1 trauma center.
Firefighters battled the blaze for about an hour but the apartment was a total loss. The apartment adjacent to the burned apartment had to be evacuated because of water damage.
Duvall said the fire was started as the occupant burned a pile of garbage behind the apartment.
The Leitchfield Police Department assisted at the scene. Leitchfield fire personnel cleared at about 9:30. No other injuries were reported.
