In a surprising announcement at Monday night’s Leitchfield City Council meeting, a longtime councilman said he is stepping down.

Raymond “Tooty” Cottrell, on the city council for nearly 10 years, said he is resigning his position effective March 31, 2020.

In a letter distributed to the council, Mayor Rick Embry and media members, Cottrell said, “After much consideration it is with regret that I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign my position on the Leitchfield City Council due to medical reasons.”

Cottrell said he has an “upcoming surgery which would result in me missing several meetings.” He added that he feels it’s in the “best interest of city government for the remainder of my term to be filled with someone who will be able to attend the meetings and represent the city …”

Cottrell noted that he is still plans to run for a council seat in the upcoming primary election, “as my medical issues will be behind me at that point,” he said.

After Cottrell’s announcement, the council tabled selecting his replacement.

On Monday, the 2020 Primary Election was moved from May 19 to June 23.
