Coronavirus (COVID-19) numbers from counties bordering Grayson County remain relatively low, with the obvious exception being a Butler County nursing home recently reporting 29 residents and 22 staff members tested positive for the virus.

As of Tuesday night, the lone COVID-19 death in the seven county region was in Butler County.

With 51 COVID-19 patients originating at Morgantown Care & Rehabilitation Center, Butler County (population 13,000) leads the immediate area in total patients with 45 (it’s unclear why the long-term care facility reported 51 positive cases on Sunday, while Butler County reports only 45 cases. It’s possible not every one of the 51 who tested positive were tested in Butler County, or it could simply be a reporting lapse). On Friday, Butler County had 11 confirmed coronavirus cases.

Hardin County (population 111,000) reports 26 cases of the virus, while Ohio County (25,000) has 11. Edmonson County (12,000) has seven COVID-19 patients, Breckinridge County (21,000) four and Hart County (19,000) has only one confirmed case. Grayson County (27,000) has five confirmed cases as of early Wednesday morning.

The population breakdown of the virus in the seven county region is as follows:

  • Butler Co. — One case for every 289 people
  • Edmonson Co. — One case for every 1,714 people
  • Ohio Co. — One case for every 2,272 people
  • Hardin Co. — One case for every 4,269 people
  • Breckinridge Co. — One case for every 5,250 people
  • Grayson Co. — One case for every 5,400 people
  • Hart Co. — One case for every 19,000 people

The counties in Kentucky with the most coronavirus cases are:

  • Jefferson (population 770,000) 623 victims, 48 deaths
  • Fayette (323,000) 209 victims, seven deaths
  • Hopkins (45,000) 99 cases, eight deaths
  • Kenton (167,000) 97, eight deaths
  • Daviess (102,000) 90 cases, three deaths

Kentucky’s most populous counties, Jefferson and Fayette, account for 37.6 percent (832) of COVID-19 cases in Kentucky (2,210), and about 25.0 percent of the state’s population (about 4.4 million).

COVID-19 victims have been diagnosed in 105 of Kentucky’s 120 counties.
