Gov. Andy Beshear announced at his daily coronavirus (COVID-19) briefing that 159 new cases of the virus have been confirmed in Kentucky.

The state now has 5,934 confirmed cases of the virus. The 159 new cases is less than half the 625 new cases announced on Tuesday, a figure bolstered by 309 inmates and staff members at Green River Correctional Complex in Muhlenberg County testing positive.

“Obviously, that is less than half of yesterday, so we do still believe we are stabilized and hopefully plateaued here in the commonwealth,” the governor said.

Beshear reported eight new deaths Wednesday, raising the state’s death toll to 283 (4.8 percent fatality rate) victims.

The deaths include two women, ages 88 and 95, from Jackson County; a 72-year-old woman from Jefferson County; two women, ages 85 and 99, from Kenton County; two women, ages 57 and 63, from Muhlenberg County; and a 73-year-old from Russell County.

At least 2,125 (35.8 percent) Kentuckians have recovered from the virus.
