At his coronavirus (COVID-19) briefing on Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear said 85 new cases of the virus were confirmed on Sunday and 120 on Monday.
The new cases increase Kentucky’s coronavirus total to 12,647 victims.
The governor also announced one new death occurred on Sunday and five deaths on Monday. The commonwealth now has had 505 (4.0 percent fatality rate) virus-related deaths.
“One (death) is too many, but that one on Sunday put us at 500 deaths due to COVID-19,” Beshear said. “As governor, but I think as any citizen of the commonwealth, you never want to see us lose 500 individuals in the course of only three months to this virus. I know it’s a virus we’d never seen. It’s a virus that we’re actively fighting against, but in that short period of time, taking 500 people is devastating. It’s awful.”
The death reported Sunday was a 91-year-old woman from Henry County. The new deaths on Monday were an 83-year-old woman from Fayette County; a 47-year-old man from Jefferson County; a 61-year-old woman from Logan County; and two women, ages 82 and 85, from Warren County.
Officials said 2,433 (19.2 percent) victims have been hospitalized with the virus, while 383 people are currently in the hospital. To date, 969 (7.7 percent) patients have been treated in ICU, while 63 victims are currently in intensive care.
At least 3,416 (27 percent) Kentuckians have recovered from the virus.
