Gov. Andy Beshear reported Wednesday at his daily briefing that 229 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed in Kentucky over the previous 24 hours.
The new cases increase Kentucky’s COVID-19 total to 14,363.
Kentucky’s public health commissioner, Dr. Steven Stack, warned that health officials have connected many recent cases in Kentucky to travel outside of the state.
“We have now identified here in Kentucky numerous people that have returned from Myrtle Beach with COVID-19,” he said. “I have to continue to urge and beg folks to be careful. It is not the time to be cavalier because we have a scenario where a place that was just starting the reopening process went from being fine to a state of emergency in three weeks.”
The governor reported one new death Wednesday, an 89-year-old man from Laurel County, raising the total to 538 (3.7 percent) Kentuckians lost to the virus.
Officials said 2,574 (17.9 percent) victims have been hospitalized since the onset of the pandemic, with 335 patients currently in a hospital. To date, 992 (6.9 percent) people have been treated in ICU, with 79 victims currently in intensive care.
At least 3,706 (25.8 percent) patients had recovered from the virus, and 368,152 (8.4 percent of the population) COVID-19 tests have been administered in the state.
