The Grayson County High School Football Alumni Association recently hosted its 2nd annual “Help the Cougars Tackle Hunger” food drive in support of the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry.
The GCHS Class of 1983 was the primary organizer of this year’s drive, with former classmates Deb Gatto, Sherry Sebastian, Frankie Carroll, and Jill Blankenship spearheading the effort.
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, and a severely limited number of fans allowed into Cougar football games, “the combined approach with several local businesses produced outstanding results,” organizers said.
“With a tremendous push from Farmer’s Feed Mill, and with drop-off sites at Bluegrass Title Company, Cash Connection, The Storehouse Coffee & Gifts, and Tammy’s Play School, the month long campaign resulted in direct monetary donations of $3,160 to the Alliance,” according to organizers.
Moreover, 1,630 total food items were collected, resulting in 1,621 total pounds of food that will provide approximately 1,380 meals to Grayson County families in need.
To put into perspective the generosity of Grayson County residents during this troubling time, last year, with no COVID-19 pandemic complicating matters, the food drive resulted in the donation of 373 pounds of food that produced 311 meals.
“Besides being a drop-off site, Farmer’s Feed Mill conducted week long “Game On” activities during the week of September 14, resulting in the donation of $350 to the GCHS Football Alumni Association’s Doug Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund, an annual scholarship provided to a graduating Cougar football team player or student staff member.
Anyone interested in making a financial donation to the GC Alliance is encouraged to make the donation via the agency’s secured link at https://gc-alliance.com/donate.
