A Big Clifty woman has been arrested for stealing and then throwing away U.S. mail.
Monday night at 10:15, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Fred Norder was dispatched to the Clarkson area after witnesses said a woman was removing mail from mailboxes on Millerstown Street.
As Norder was en route, two people who had their mail stolen followed the suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Kelly R. Higdon, as she traveled in her Ford Taurus into Hart County, back to Clarkson and then to the Tar Hill community, where Higdon “pulled into a residence located on Salt River Road, just west of Tar Hill,” according to the arrest citation.
During Norder’s response, he “located several pieces of mail on St. Paul Road; scattered from Hwy 62 to Tar Hill and on Salt River Road, leading to the residence where the suspect had stopped,” according to the arrest citation.
The mail Norder found all had Millerstown Street addresses, “with several different names and apartment unit numbers,” the citation stated.
When Norder arrived at the St. Paul Road address where Higdon had previously stopped, she had left the residence. The sergeant, though, being familiar with Higdon, found the suspect at her home in the 400 block of Skeese Road.
Norder noted in the citation that while traveling to Skeese Road, he found more mail on Spurrier Road, “toward Skeese Road.”
Upon arriving at the suspect’s home, Norder noticed additional stolen mail in plain view inside Higdon’s vehicle. When Norder made contact with Higdon, she told the sergeant she had been “gathering mail for a friend who was out of town.”
While being questioned, Higdon, who met Norder outside her home, began to reenter her residence and physically resist. The sergeant, though, was eventually able bring Higdon into compliance.
She was arrested and charged with possession of stolen mail, a class D felony, resisting arrest and criminal littering. Higdon was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
