A coronavirus vaccine cannot arrive in Kentucky soon enough following the surge in COVID-19 cases at Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation (GNR) shifting into high gear, as the facility has had 19 new cases of the virus confirmed since November 25.
Since November 15, the facility has reported 41 new cases of the virus, and currently has 30 active cases: 15 residents and 15 staff members, according to the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH).
The 19 new cases include 11 residents and eight staff members.
No new coronavirus-related deaths have been reported, leaving the total at nine deaths arising from the long-term care facility.
Since March, GNR has had 117 people associated with the 72-bed facility — 70 residents, 47 staff — test positive for coronavirus.
Grayson County’s other nursing home, Spring View Nursing & Rehabilitation, has had a total of 44 cases arise from the facility after a new case (staff member) was recently confirmed. Spring View currently has two active cases: one resident and one staff member, according to the KDPH.
Two Spring View resident deaths have been blamed on the virus.
Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday said approximately 38,000 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine should arrive in Kentucky by mid-December, with a high percentage of the vaccines earmarked for residents and staff members of long-term care facilities.
