A case of mistaken identity has led to the arrest of a Caneyville man on drug charges.
Monday night at approximately 8:45, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Zane Greer, Deputies Rick Mehlbauer and Sean Fentress and Constable Alvin Dockery responded to Beaver Dam Road (Hwy 62) after a property owner told Central Dispatch he was following a red Ford F150 truck that ran over his fence. The incident was reported to have taken place on Old Dog Creek Road.
The victim followed the truck, being driven by 31-year-old Jefferey A. Payton, of Caneyville, onto Kelley Road to Windy Ridge Road before turning onto Beaver Dam Road, eastbound.
Greer attempted a traffic stop on Beaver Dam Road just west of Caneyville, but Payton failed to stop, as he continued driving east at about 45 miles per hour. In the 300 block of West Maple Street (Hwy 62), Payton pulled into a driveway, ending the low-speed pursuit.
During a search of Payton and the truck, deputies located methamphetamine, opiates and drug paraphernalia.
He was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine, opiates), fleeing or evading police, having a prescription controlled substance not in its proper container, careless driving, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Payton was not charged with criminal mischief for running over the fence, as further investigation by deputies determined that Payton was not the person who ran over the fence.
He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
