An allegedly highly impaired Butler County woman has been accused of assaulting her infant and leaving the baby in the middle of Beaver Dam Road.
Sunday night at approximately 11:30, Butler County deputies were dispatched to Beaver Dam Road near Logansport and found an infant “lying in the middle of Beaver Dam Road,” according to a report by the Beech Tree News.
The infant’s mother, 36-year-old Marie Michelle Depoorter, of Logansport, was found standing nearby, leaning against a guardrail. She appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, and told deputies that the infant’s father had committed suicide and that she wanted her baby to also die.
She admitted to police that she was under the influence of methamphetamine but that she was forced to take the drug.
The baby had suffered a cut to her head from being “slammed into the pavement,” the news outlet reports. The infant was additionally approaching hypothermia and was bleeding from her feet. The baby was taken by EMS to a hospital.
The baby’s father was located a 139 Boys Camp Road, just east of Logansport, and did not know that Depoorter had taken the child from their residence.
Depoorter was charged with first-degree criminal abuse (victim under the age of 12), public intoxication (excludes alcohol) and first-degree disorderly conduct.
She was lodged in the Butler County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.
