The Grayson County High School Football Alumni Association (GCHSFAA) collected over two tons of food and more than $2,200 in donations for the Grayson County Alliance (GCA) Food Pantry.

The GCHSFAA hosted its 4th annual “Help the Cougars Tackle Hunger Food Drive” coinciding with Cougars’ Spirit Week and Homecoming Game against Muhlenberg County on September 23.

“A combined effort from the Homecoming tailgate and game, local businesses, churches, and all the public schools in Grayson County produced tremendous results,” GCHSFAA President Roger Lush said.

In total, 4,148 pounds of non-perishable food items were donated along with $2,250 in cash to benefit the GCA’s Food Pantry. Those donations will produce 21,687 meals, Lush said.

The largest donator in the food drive was the Grayson County High School student body which collected 972 pounds of food.

In addition to all of the county’s public schools, participating in the effort were: Tri-Parish Catholic Churches of Grayson County; St. Joseph Catholic Church; The Restoration Place; Bluegrass Land Title; and Farmer’s Feed Mill Restaurant.

Both the amount of food donated and the monetary donation topped last year’s totals, according to Lush.

“The 2022 Tackle Hunger campaign will make a significant impact in the fight for the one in seven adults and one in four children hungry in Grayson County,” Lush stated. “Thanks to all who participated and to everyone who supported this cause.”

Since its inception in 2018, in addition to collecting thousands of pounds of food and thousands of dollars of donations for the GCA Food Pantry, the GCHSFAA has awarded two $500 scholarships to two of GCHS’s graduating Cougar football players; donated $1,000 to the Cougar Football Boosters. Furthermore, the GCHSFAA donated $500 to the Graves County High School football program for its Tornado Relief Fund.

In March, the organization raised $1,490 through a raffle for a University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari autographed basketball. That money was earmarked for the organization’s annual Doug Thompson Memorial Scholarship and to “support the current Cougar football program and their boosters.”
