A Leitchfield woman has been arrested after being indicted for stealing medication and cash from elderly residents of Parkland Manor Apartments and Parkland Manor West.
The Leitchfield Police Department investigation began in late May when law enforcement “became aware of multiple incidents of theft and/or burglaries connected to residents of Parkland Manor Apartments,” according to LPD Detective Sgt. Ian Renfrow. The facility is located at 702 William Thomason Byway.
During the course of the investigation, another complaint was received in June from a resident of Parkland Manor West, on Patty Place Way in Leitchfield. A week later, and “as efforts increased to resolve these incidents, yet another victim reported he had been the victim of theft as well on June 30,” Renfrow said.
Investigators worked — “with tremendous assistance from Homeland Inc. Property Management (the parent company of Parkland Manor Apartments) — to bring these incidents to a halt,” according to Renfrow.
“Many of the victims,” Renfrow said, “are elderly and living on a fixed income, and were finding money and much needed medication (e.g. Hydrocodone) missing from their apartments.”
Some victims told investigators that they were terminally ill and unable to replace the stolen medication.
Statements were obtained from numerous tenants, police said, which led to the identification of the suspect, 25-year-old Sydney Horton.
Horton, who worked for Homeland Inc. Property Management but has since been terminated, was recently indicted by a Grayson County Grand Jury on four counts of second-degree burglary and two counts of theft by unlawful taking (controlled substance, under $10,000).
She was arrested by LPD Officer Eugene Cain and lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center but is no longer listed as an inmate.
