After a month-long investigation, two Meade County parents have been charged with trying to kill their two-month-old baby.

The Meade County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23-year-old Kayla N. Hayes and 20-year-old Noah R. Helton, both of Brandenburg, and charged each with attempted murder, first-degree domestic violence assault and first-degree criminal abuse (child under the age of 12).

Multiple media reports indicate the infant was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital on November 9. The baby was suffering from several potentially life-threatening injuries, including 17 fractures. Hospital personnel said the injuries were the result of “inflicted physical abuse.”

Hayes and Helton are being held in the Meade County Detention Center. The baby continues to receive treatment.

The Cabinet for Health and Family Services, according to WAVE3.com, awarded temporary custody of the child to the grandparents.
