One person was killed and a juvenile airlifted following a wreck caused by distracted driving.
The accident occurred Saturday night in Bowling Green at approximately 9:50 when a pickup truck, being driven by a male juvenile, ran a red light at the intersection of Interstate Drive and Corvette Drive, near the Corvette Museum. The truck then struck a Chevrolet Impala, being driven by 60-year-old Sandra Cardwell, of Bowling Green, that was attempting to make a left turn.
The Chevy also contained two juveniles and an adult male. One juvenile was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center while the other was treated at The Medical Center at Bowling Green for a broken collar bone and released. The adult male was not injured.
Cardwell was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the truck, which contained three juveniles, told the Bowling Green Police Department he ran the red light because he was “distracted by his cell phone,” according to a report by WNKY.com. Witnesses and surveillance video from the area confirmed the truck’s light was red.
No one in the truck suffered injuries.
Police seized the driver of the truck’s cell phone. The investigation is ongoing.
The National Transportation Safety Board said 3,522 people were killed in crashes caused by distracted driving in 2021, the latest year statistics are available. That represented about nine-percent of all fatal automobile accidents in the U.S in 2021.
