One Breckinridge County firefighter was injured and two firefighters were overcome by heat while battling a structure fire.
Sunday morning just before 11, the McDaniels, Harned and Hardinsburg Fire Departments responded to a “multistory structure” fire, according to McDaniels Fire Chief Steve Poole.
“Upon arrival, McDaniels Fire started interior and exterior attack operations. During this time, McDaniels had one firefighter fall from the roof of the structure to the ground, sustaining internal injuries,” Poole stated. Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said the firefighter landed on the air pack, which was strapped to the firefighter’s back.
The injured firefighter was transported by EMS to McDaniels Memorial Park where he was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.
Two Hardinsburg Fire Department members suffered “heat-related injuries,” Poole said, and were transported by EMS to Breckinridge Health hospital. Additionally, two of the structure’s occupants were transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center with “heat- and smoke-related injuries.”
Late Sunday night Poole offered the following update: “All firefighters are out of the hospital and at home doing better now. Outcomes were a lot better than feared and no major injuries were found. Thanks for all the prayers and support.”
Duvall said his department was on standby Sunday afternoon and evening to cover fires or major accidents in central or southern Breckinridge County, as firefighters supported their injured co-workers.
