A Leitchfield man has been arrested after allegedly driving impaired with a small child in the vehicle. The mother of the boy was also arrested after arriving to pick up her child while under the influence.
On Monday night at approximately 10:15, Leitchfield Police Department Sgt. DJ Newton observed a 2006 Chevrolet Impala traveling on South Main Street with an equipment violation.
Newton stopped the vehicle, being driven by 24-year-old Brandon King, at the BP at 227 South Main Street.
Officers Wally Ritter, Brian Jennings and Justin Cockerel arrived and assisted with the stop.
Upon making contact with King, Newton detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, according to the arrest citation. Newton also noticed King had “bloodshot watery eyes and slightly dilated pupils.”
King then “freely gave officers a baggie containing marijuana from his pocket,” the citation states.
In the front passenger seat, police also observed a small child (four- to five-year-old boy) in a booster seat.
King was given a field sobriety test and arrested.
“King admitted to smoking marijuana within an hour of operation (of the vehicle) and stated that he should not have been driving,” according to the citation.
During a search of King’s vehicle, police located a glass pipe with burnt marijuana residue, four marijuana roaches and paraphernalia, according to the citation.
During the stop, the boy’s mother, 26-year-old Destiny Lalond, of Leitchfield, arrived to pick up her child. Ritter conducted a field sobriety test and arrested Lalond on a DUI charge. She was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
King was charged with DUI, second-degree wanton endangerment, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, expired operator’s license, failure to produce and insurance card, and improper use of blue lights. He was also served with a warrant out of Breckinridge County.
He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
