A Hardin County man is facing prison after a child in his care accidentally shot and killed himself.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon January 25, 2025, at approximately 1:00 at a residence on North Street in Radcliff. According to a report by The News-Enterprise, a six-year-old boy gained access to a firearm and shot himself in the head.

As K105 reported in January, the Radcliff Police Department investigation showed that 26-year-old Damarco R. Callen, of Radcliff, left a loaded firearm underneath a pillow in a bedroom where the child, Callen and other family members sleep.

Callen was in another room of the home when he heard a gunshot come from the bedroom.

The child was airlifted to a Louisville hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Callen was recently indicted by a Hardin County Grand Jury for second-degree manslaughter, a class C felony punishable by five to 10 years in prison, felony wanton endangerment, unlawfully providing a handgun to a juvenile or permitting a juvenile to possess a handgun, and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.

He is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond.
