The Grayson County High School tennis team recently competed in the 3rd Region tournament and had strong finishes.
In the individual competition, Ava Walker finished as the regional runner-up after losing a tough match to a five-time defending champion from Owensboro Catholic.
On the doubles side, the teams of Carter Bernard/Miles Mudd and Maddox Powell/Jordan Smith both made it to the regional semifinals before losing to Owensboro Catholic. Additionally, the duo of Emma Walker/Grace Franich also made the regional doubles semifinals
All of the entries above will now make the state tennis tournament, which will begin May 27 in Lexington.
In prior years, the team awards were decided by results in the individual competition, but starting last year, they transitioned to a team tournament format.
The setup features three singles matches and two doubles matches, with the most wins out of the grouping advancing to the next round.
The Lady Cougars dominated Muhlenberg County in the semifinals with straight set victories in each match.
The Cougar boys drew a tough challenge in Owensboro Catholic and gave a valiant effort, but fell just short.
The girls returned for the region championship on Thursday evening before dropping a tight contest. The region runner-up award was the 21st time that they have finished with that recognition.
While the team doesn’t advance to state as a whole, the individuals will find out their draws next Thursday.
