Grayson County Middle School students participated in the school’s second Day of Service earlier this week.

The brainchild of former GCMS Assistant Principal David Morgan, now principal at Wilkey Elementary, the event allows students to serve others and experience the good they can do through seemingly simple acts and thoughtfulness.

“I’m a firm believer in community service, and our kids need to go out and basically show exactly how good they truly are,” Morgan told K105 last year about the one of the motivations behind Day of Service. “Quite often you hear people in our community talk about how kids have changed, and how there’s not necessarily any good coming out of them, but that’s the furthest thing from the truth.”

Day of Service is also a reflection of the school’s Core Values — caring, determination, honesty, respect, and responsibility — and a hands-on way to bring them to life through action, the school said in a social media post.

On Monday, students worked on various projects on the middle school campus, at Leitchfield and Clarkson city parks, Wilkey and its preschool, and the Grayson Co. Alliance Food Pantry.

Students additionally helped with cleanup and beautification projects, packed food, and made cards for nursing home and rehab residents. They also hosted a very special breakfast for school resource officers and the law enforcement community.

“We have a lot of awesome kids here in Grayson County,” Morgan told K105 last year, “and we wanted to showcase our students in going out and doing projects, taking care of community needs; some of the basic ones that we can take care of. We are fortunate, there are some people in our community that are less fortunate. They may not have the ability to do certain things that maybe we can take of for them.”
