Work on the William Thomason Byway extension project will require street blockages in Leitchfield over the next four weeks.

As K105 reported on Tuesday, sewer line work began last week on the William Thomason Byway extension project on the “KY 259 end of the bypass near the parkway,” Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 4 Public Information Officer Chris Jessie said.

Jessie, in an update to K105, said the work “will require blockages on side streets to the west of KY 259, including White Street, West Lake Drive and South English Street.” In Jessie’s update, West Lake Drive replaced Rhodes Street on the list of streets that will require blockages.

The closures, according to Jessie, are “expected to only require blockages of a short duration to move equipment and materials.”

Flaggers will be present to direct traffic during the initial sewer line work phase.

In two weeks, though, “longer term closures are expected to take place as barricades will be positioned along West Lake Drive and White Street,” Jessie said.

Local traffic will use a combination — depending on origin and destination — of adjacent streets for access to and from KY 259.  Detour signs will be posted.

This phase of work is expected to last into early August, according to Jessie.

The project will connect KY 259 near the Western Kentucky Parkway interchange to US 62 and KY 54 on the northwest side of Leitchfield. With hopes of improving safety and efficiency, the byway extension “will allow better access to locations along US 62 and KY 54,” the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said.

Initial work on the project began in March.
