A young father and his daughter have been killed in a crash in Harlan County.
The two-vehicle accident occurred Sunday night at approximately 6:50 on Hwy 119 in Cumberland, according to Kentucky State Police Post 10 Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs.
Killed in the crash were 25-year-old Trey V. Stewart, of Jenkins, and his daughter, nine-year-old Kieranee E. Smith, according to Harlan County Deputy Coroner Dale Halcomb.
“Other occupants from both vehicles were flown to area medical centers, while one was taken to Harlan ARH,” Halcomb said.
Jacobs told WYMT.com that both the driver, Stewart, and passenger in the front seat of the car, presumably Smith, were not wearing seatbelts. He said the youngest child, a one-year-old, was in the backseat of the vehicle in a car seat.
“As a police officer arriving to a scene like this is, it’s very traumatic,” Jacobs said in a social media post. “Anytime that you work a fatality, no matter what the age is, and in this case all these individuals are young whether it’s 25-year-old down to the one-year-old. All that’s involved are young kids.”
