With the start of the 2025 regular season just over a month away, the Grayson County football team has spent the last week competing in 7-on-7 action.

This style of the game has no tackling/pads, and teams are required to pass on each down.

These dates have become even more important this year for the Cougars as they look to replace two-year starting quarterback Kolby Chaffins, who became only the second player in program history to pass for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons.

Senior Jake Bratcher and sophomore Trigg Payne are currently battling it out to see who will get the start in the season opener next month.

Last Thursday, the Cougars traveled to Hancock County on the first day following the dead period before heading south to Logan County on Tuesday. The latter trip saw them play five total games with wins over Russellville, Muhlenberg County, and even perennial power South Warren.

Wednesday night saw the action shift to Cougar Stadium with a rematch against the Hornets, a game that the visitors won 8-4.

Both Bratcher and Payne passed for a pair of touchdowns, with Kadin Hanshaw and Kayden Tyner catching two each.

Tyner — who was a member of the soccer team last year — was also a standout on the defensive side of the ball with two interceptions.

This coming Monday, the KHSAA allows for teams to start having padded football practices before scrimmages are allowed to begin in the month of August.

This year, Grayson County will host a home scrimmage on August 8 before traveling to Bullitt Central on August 15.

The 2025 Cougars will officially open the season against Edmonson County in Brownsville on August 22. In that game, they will look to win their seventh straight game over the Wildcats and take control of the overall series for the first time.
