A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison after he killed two people in a DUI crash in 2022.
Peyton Sparks was 19-years-old when he attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone and struck a vehicle head-on, killing 57-year-old Opal Wilkes and 55-year-old Rigoberto Madrigal, near Catlettsburg in Boyd County, according to The Daily Independent.
The crash happened in the 7500 block of Paul Purvis Road (Hwy 168) on the afternoon of February 15, 2022.
Sparks, who prosecutors said was under the influence of Xanax and marijuana at the time of crash, was initially charged with two counts of murder, two counts of felony wanton endangerment, DUI, possession of marijuana, driving on a suspended operator’s license, improper passing, reckless driving, and non-moving violations.
In a plea deal, Sparks pled guilty to two counts of manslaughter and two counts of felony wanton endangerment.
He was sentenced on Tuesday to 17 years in prison. Sparks will be credited with the three years, seven months he’s already served in the Boyd County Detention Center.
