A former Murray High School student has come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against a teacher that occurred over 15 years ago.

Kentucky State Police said investigators initially received a report in August 2018 from the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) alleging possible sexual relations between Jason Shelby, who was a Murray High School teacher at the time of the alleged offenses, and at least two students.

Allegations of misconduct against Shelby, 46, go back as far as 2005. However, the first report made to state police came from EPSB in August 2018. Shelby resigned from his teaching position in October 2018.

“Upon receiving the report in 2018, KSP detectives began a thorough investigation, but it was not until one victim recently came forward that enough evidence was available to obtain a warrant for Shelby,” state police said.

Last month, the former student reported being involved in a sexual relationship with Shelby while she was a student in 2008 and 2009, according to state police. During that time, the victim was 15- and 16-years-old.

The offenses took place in Shelby’s car, residence and a local park.

On Tuesday, a warrant was obtained charging Shelby with third-degree rape and first-degree sexual abuse. He was arrested on Wednesday and lodged in the Calloway County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond. Shelby is no longer listed as an inmate.

The investigation remains ongoing by KSP Det. William Propes.
