The investigation determined that a 2021 Can-Am UTV overturned with two juvenile occupants. The passenger, a 14-year-old, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office. The juvenile driver was transported to a nearby hospital.
The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Brennan Eckart.
Pike Co. Schools Superintendent Freddie Bowling gave the following statement to WSAZ:
It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of one of our students. Our hearts are heavy as we grieve this tremendous loss within our school family. On behalf of the Pike County School District, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates, and teachers during this difficult time.
We know that the loss of a young life affects our entire community. In the coming days, additional counseling and support services will be available at Belfry Middle School for students and staff who may need them.
As we come together in mourning, let us also come together in support of one another. We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts and prayers and respect their privacy as they navigate this heartbreaking time.
