Four people were injured in a chemical explosion at a dairy facility in Laurel County.
The London Fire Department said firefighters responded Wednesday morning at 7:00 “to a chemical release and explosion” at Borden Dairy Company on Hwy 80 near London.
“Upon arrival, fire units quickly established control of the scene and initiated decontamination operations to ensure the safety of both employees and first responders,” the London Fire Dept. said in a social media post.
The chemical involved was identified as Hyperflex (acid sanitizer), which contains phosphoric and nitric acid, according to the fire department.
“While this product is corrosive and can cause significant health effects with direct contact, we are relieved to report that no life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time,” the fire department said.
Those injured suffered from chemical vapor burns, and one person had a broken leg. The injuries are considered non-life threatening.
“There was some chemical, vapor burns. We were more worried about the airway. Some chemical burns when we got on contact. We made sure we had mass decon on scene and at the hospital as well,” London Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Brandon Wagers told WKYT.com.
