A Whitley County woman has been arrested after breaking the nose of a deputy with his own baton.

The incident happened on Monday night on Hwy 25 in Williamsburg when 37-year-old Amy Mabes, while deputies were responding to a disturbance call regarding someone breaking windows at a residence, bit two deputies before breaking a deputy’s nose with his baton.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Mabes in the backyard of a residence holding a “large metal tool,” according to a report by WKYT.com. The suspect fled deputies on foot into a wooded area.

A deputy attempted to tase Mabes, but the device was ineffective. Police then took the suspect to the ground and placed her in handcuffs. While a deputy escorted Mabes out of the woods, she slipped out a handcuff and struck the deputy.

As the deputy attempted to take control of Mabes, he used a baton on the suspect before dropping the weapon during the fight.

Mabes then picked up the baton and struck the deputy in the face, breaking his nose and cutting the deputy above one of his eyes, requiring stitches.

Another deputy arrived to assist, as Mabes bit both deputies while she was again being placed into handcuffs.

“After being taken into custody, Mabes told authorities she has AIDS and hepatitis,” WKYT.com reports.

Mabes was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center where she’s been charged with first-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree assault of a police officer, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree disorderly conduct, fleeing or evading police, and resisting arrest.
