As most everyone knows, installing a child’s car seat is no easy task, and if done incorrectly, it can have serious or even deadly consequences for a child.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that car seats reduce the risk of injury for kids by up to 82 percent when compared with children wearing just seat belts. Booster seats for older kids reduces that risk by 45 percent,” according to the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children (APHC).

Federal highway authorities say property installed car seats reduce fatalities by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for kids one- to four-years-old, APHC said.

In an effort to keep Kentucky’s kids safe, on November 7, Kentucky State Police and Hoover Majors Insurance are jointly hosting a Holiday Safety Check event offering free car seat inspections for local families.

“I, along with other Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, will be on site to assist parents and caregivers in ensuring their child’s car seat is properly installed before the busy holiday travel season,” KSP Det. Casey Keown said.

The Holiday Safety Check is scheduled for Thursday, November 7 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Hoover Majors Insurance at 209 West White Oak Street, Suite A.

There will be activities for the kids, free food, snacks and drinks.

“This is a FREE event for the community. Stop in and just say hello. Make sure those babies are strapped in safely,” Keown said.

No appointment is necessary, as families are encouraged to stop by anytime during event hours.
