More than 130 Grayson County High School students passed Advanced Placement (AP) tests.

Grayson County Schools (GCS) said that “a record 137 students passed one or more AP tests to earn college credit.” Students saved $102,375 in tuition costs based on KCTCS rates.

The school district said that the 137 students who passed AP testing were 20 more students than last year.

“By choosing AP, participants also earned money they can use now or save for future college expenses,” GCS said.

The students were recently presented with a ceremonial check for $17,500. The money will be distributed to the students based on the number of tests taken and passed.

To earn college credit, you must pass an AP exam with a qualifying score, typically a 3, 4, or 5, depending on the college's policy. While a 3 is often considered a passing score by the College Board, many universities require a 4 or 5, especially for more competitive institutions. You earn credit by taking the corresponding AP test at the end of your high school course and submitting your score to the college.
    How to earn credit
Take the AP exam: You must take and pass the exam for the specific AP course you completed.
Achieve a qualifying score: AP exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. A score of 3 or higher is required for credit at many colleges, but some have higher minimums.
Meet college requirements: Each college has its own policies on which AP scores earn credit and for which courses. A score of 3 on one exam might earn credit, while a score of 3 on another exam might not.
Submit your scores: Scores are released in July and can be sent to your high school and designated colleges. You can also request that certain scores not be sent to specific schools.
    Key considerations
College policies vary: What earns credit at one university may not at another. More selective institutions often require higher scores.
Score vs. grade: Passing the AP test is what earns credit, not just the grade you received in the class.
Types of credit: Earning a qualifying AP score can grant you college credit, advanced placement in a course (allowing you to skip it), or both.
Flexibility: Earning college credit can give you the flexibility to change majors, take more advanced classes, or even graduate early.
