An Elizabethtown teenager has been accused of causing “significant injuries” to an infant.

The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded on October 28 after an infant was found with serious head and other injuries.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division, in coordination with Child Protective Services, immediately began an investigation.

“Over the past two weeks, investigators conducted interviews with the parents and medical professionals regarding the significant injuries sustained by the infant,” the sheriff’s office said.

The infant, according to a report by The News-Enterprise, suffered from “subarachnoid (bleeding in the space between the brain and the tissues that cover the brain) and subdural hemorrhages (where blood collects beneath the dura mater, the outermost membrane surrounding the brain), retinal hemorrhages, petechiae (red or purple spots on the skin caused by bleeding from broken capillaries) to the neck and eyes and abdominal bruising.”

The infant is hospitalized at Norton Children’s Hospital.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested 19-year-old Zachary S. Foster on Wednesday night and charged with first-degree criminal abuse (victim under the age of 12).

He was lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond. He was released on Thursday.
